Rocket Man-Elton John (lyrics)

Lyrics to 'Rocket Man' by Elton John: She packed my bags last night pre-flight Zero hour nine a.m. And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife It's lonely out in space on such a timeless flight. Rocket Men is a rather preposterous novel about the United States sending a space craft to the moon in The story begins with the rocket on the launchpad, waiting for blast off, with brief flashbacks to the launch prep, as the administrators make last minute checks on mission readiness and the "astronauts" undergo final training. Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon Hardcover – Illustrated, April 3, by Robert Kurson (Author). Rocket Men tells the thrilling story of this historic mission through the eyes of its remarkable crew, three men who had the admiration and support of the entire astronaut corps.” — Joe Engle, X Test Pilot, NASA Astronaut, and Space Shuttle Commander. ROCKET MEN is Nelson's otherwise fine telling of the Apollo 11 mission and the lead-up to it. I just hope his facts are more accurate than my memory. ROCKET MEN incorporates a section of thirty-nine useful photographs.

From The Washington Post :. The book includes chapters dedicated to each astronaut, the Space Race itself, and background and chronological progress of the mission including critical maneuvers and mission setbacks.

The book reached 7 on the New York Times bestseller list and has received positive reviews from critics. The film rights to Rocket Men were secured by Makeready prior to the book's publication.

Jan 30, Linden rated it it was amazing. John F. Kennedy had promised to put a man on the moon before the end of the s and after his assassination, Lyndon Johnson supported this unlikely goal.

The USA had a tremendous desire to win the space race, however, and against all odds, Apollo 8 was conceived and implemented, some said too quickly.

Astronauts Borman, Lovell, and Anders went on the historic Christmas mission to orbit the moon, and after a terrible year of riots, carnage in Vietnam, and assassinations of two beloved John F.

Feb 11, Laurens Ter Heegde rated it it was amazing Shelves: non-fiction. This book has been one of the most thrilling reads of my life. Kurson managed to draw me into the command module and make me feel like I was there together with Borman, Lovell and Anders.

The narrative extensively treats the context of the mission in relation to the tensions that were troubling the United States in Since I was born over three decades after the events, this greatly helped in explaining the motives behind taking the gigantic risks involved with the mission.

The story conveys This book has been one of the most thrilling reads of my life. The story conveys the experience and effects of the mission on both a personal and collective level.

Ultimately, I believe that this book does justice to the achievements of all the people involved in leaving our own world and reaching another for the first time in history.

Feb 18, Janine rated it it was amazing. So incredible! The writing is stunning and the Epilogue left me weepinghis Authors Note at the end is one of my favorites ever.

I wish hed pen a tale about lesser-known women : So incredible! Feb 17, Victoria rated it liked it Shelves: netgalley , abandoned.

This is an excellent read and I think most with an interest in anything space will really enjoy it. For me, perhaps it's because I've read SO much about the space program, I found it it to be somewhat pedestrian.

I didn't find too much here that I didn't already know something about and didn't think this telling brought that much new to the story.

Apr 11, Christi Tulenko rated it it was amazing. Read while sheltering at home during a national pandemic.

I absolutely loved this beautifully written account of Apollo 8 and the three Astronauts who made Mans first Journey to the moon. Sep 22, Cynda rated it liked it Shelves: biography-or-memior , reading-mostly-nonfiction , travel , read , technology , moon.

Very accessible for just about anyone interested in the topic. I got to meet the astronauts,to meet their families of origin and generation, and to get a glimpse of what life was like on board Apollo 8.

All of this written in a way that read like a novel--somethung important to many many readers. I just wanted more technology and science. I will take less readability almost any day if I can get the information.

Overall: Enjoyable and Informative. May 25, Jim rated it it was amazing. The main part of the book focuses on the three astronauts who were the first to go to the Moon--not to land on it, but orbit it--and those were the three men of Apollo 8- Borman, Lovell, and Anders.

Kurson gives us a succinct background to Apollo, which was the Cold War and Kennedy's commitment to send men to the moon by the end of the s.

What I did NOT know about Apollo 8 is that it was rushed ahead of schedule, perhaps unduly risking the lives of the astronauts. There were so many possibilities of things going wrong and the men dying in space that I have to ask: was it worth the risk in order to beat the Russians to the Moon?

Jan 24, Fredrick Danysh rated it really liked it Shelves: history , science , advance-read. Rocket Men is a record of America's space program's efforts to beat the Soviets in getting to the moon.

It mentions Apollo 1 disaster that took three lives and caused the acceleration of American efforts. Apollo 8's entire workup and mission is laid out.

This is a decent work about space exploration and NASA. My copy was a free review copy through Goodreads. Sep 23, Val rated it it was amazing Shelves: non-fiction , , astronauts.

This is one of the best books I've ever read! I'm embarrassed to admit how little I knew about Apollo 8 at the time it was taking place.

Probably because I was a teenager and thought everything was all about me, me, me. I loved that there was more to the book than strictly the race to the moon.

It also covered other things that were going on in , like the Viet Nam war, race riots, assassinations, and violent protests. What a wretched time that was.

It makes the wretched year we're This is one of the best books I've ever read! It makes the wretched year we're in now a wee bit easier to tolerate!

Kurson writes in clear, simple language, avoiding technical matters and cryptic NASA jargon, in order to focus on the people involved.

I definitely appreciated that. I was so afraid that much of what was in the book would go right over my head. I also appreciated the photos in the book.

Speaking of photos, I've seen the photo of the prisoner in Viet Nam being shot in the head many times. Now I know the story behind it, which is that the prisoner had just assassinated an entire family.

He wasn't just a random, innocent prisoner as I had thought for all of these years. It made everything more real for me when I was able to read not only about the three astronauts but also about their wives during the space race.

Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders are the only astronauts from that time who are still married to their same spouses! I truly feel the story of this space mission deserves to be better known and this is the perfect book to read if you're not familiar with it.

Rocket Men had the perfect ending when it shared a telegram received from an anonymous stranger. Jan 31, Bill Shannon rated it it was amazing. I've read my share of books about NASA and the space program, and while most of them consider the Moon Landing to be the apex of the early program's accomplishments, it seems like the Apollo 8 mission -- the first to go around the moon without actually landing on it -- might be the more galvanizing of the two.

I'd have to say this is probably the best book I've read so far about space exploration. The flight of Apollo 8 was the first time that humans left the earth's gravitational pull I've read my share of books about NASA and the space program, and while most of them consider the Moon Landing to be the apex of the early program's accomplishments, it seems like the Apollo 8 mission -- the first to go around the moon without actually landing on it -- might be the more galvanizing of the two.

The flight of Apollo 8 was the first time that humans left the earth's gravitational pull and entered that of another celestial body.

Apollo 8, in retrospect, was an unbelievable feat of engineering, mathematics, precision and piloting skill. The author, Robert Kurson, does such a beautiful job of painting a picture of this insular world.

He introduces each of the three characters -- Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders -- organically, so we get to know each of them as individual humans, not just as Olympians of space exploration.

We follow each man's journey up to the point at which they are pulled together as a space all-star team of sorts, chosen to undertake the most ambitious journey in mankind's history.

The mission is put in context of its time: the s in general and in particular, a time of great turmoil in the middle of the Cold War, a trio of a traumatic assassinations, the Vietnam war, and the dawn of the Nixon presidency.

The mission wasn't just important to the pocket protector set at Cape Canaveral, but to America and to human kind.

I have to say out of all the books I've read about space travel, no book better captures what it must have felt like sitting in that spacecraft going to uncharted territory.

You really do feel the tension, the claustrophobia and the pure awe of that journey. Feb 01, KatieSuzanne rated it it was amazing Shelves: audiobook.

This was such an amazing book and story. It was before my time, but not that much before, and I had no clue about any of this stuff.

It's crazy how quickly things are lost. The story telling of everyone involved and the state of the country at the time was incredible.

I had a friend in my car that listened to a half hour of the audiobook with me while they were in orbit and he had to borrow it and listen to the whole thing afterwards.

The audiobook had a bit at the end by the author talking This was such an amazing book and story. The audiobook had a bit at the end by the author talking about interviewing the astronauts and how he came to write the book.

Did pretty well there, but when MotoAmerica wanted to move Superstock riders into Superbike, it got really expensive to compete.

But when Terry [Vance] began selling factory-spec XGs, we figured that was the best way forward for This AFT season has been like no other, of course, with Covid forcing a massive schedule tweak…eight double-header weekends featuring just two Short Tracks two for Singles, one for Twins , four Miles, no TTs and the rest Half-Miles.

Regardless of whether the Mile- and Half-Mile-weighted schedule favored the XG or not, Team Latus came out of the gate swinging, Rispoli and company wanting the paddock and the racing world to know that his four podiums last year were no fluke — and that Team Latus was a genuine contender for the Production Twins title.

At what may have been the last Indy Mile ever the track scheduled to be redone for horse-racing only Rispoli recorded his first National win in Production Twins with a crushing, second runaway victory on night number two, though there was drama aplenty leading up to it.

First, the team blew up one of its two engines during testing in the days before the race. Rispoli recorded another runner-up on Friday night at Indy, but his dominating performance on Saturday night did more than put him on the top step of the podium for the first time in more than a decade — it triggered a protest by the Ryan Varnes team.

So I think some were thinking we doped the tire or something, and were keeping it warm for that reason. The exhaust was ricocheting off the walls and I thought there were bikes right on my ass, so I kept pushing.

The protest was a bit silly. I teased Varnes afterward, asking him if he had an extra thou on him for beer money.

The Springfield Miles over Labor Day weekend were exciting as well, but for different reasons. Rispoli ran fast on Saturday but faded a bit at the end to finish fifth, with Varnes snagging his first-ever Mile win.

Prior to a backmarker crash and subsequent red flag with just four laps remaining, the group of eight put on a white-knuckle display, with guys running high, low and in the middle, the riders trading places constantly.

On the restart, Rispoli followed for a few laps and then jammed his way to the front on the final lap, leading out of turn four with enough of a gap to grab the win.

I fired it up the inside of turns three and four, was able to get a little gap, and tucked in for dear life!
